Roll-Up Checkers Board — PDF Sewing Pattern

Make a quilted checkers board — draughts, if you are in the UK — that rolls up with the pieces inside and ties shut. Finished board approximately 20" × 20" (51 cm × 51 cm). A scrap-friendly project that turns a box of leftovers into a game you will actually use.

Why it looks harder than it is

It is squares. Sixty-four of them, all the same size, joined with one straight seam repeated — and because every seam is identical, you sew them one after another without stopping, in a chain, and cut them apart at the end. There are no curves, no points to match and no templates.

The game pieces are not sewn at all. They are cut from felt, which does not fray and does not need a single stitch.

What you make

The quilted board · the integrated fabric ties that roll it shut · twelve felt pieces in one shape and colour · twelve in another

What you receive

An instant PDF download, available the moment your payment clears. No physical item is shipped.

  • Step-by-step instructions with colour photographs at every stage
  • Cutting, piecing, quilting and binding covered in full
  • Instructions for the integrated ties
  • Templates for the felt pieces

Details

Finished size: approximately 20" × 20" (51 cm × 51 cm) Skill level: beginner friendly. The pattern introduces chain piecing, nesting seams and basic machine quilting — three techniques that carry over to every quilt you make afterwards. Technique: pieced patchwork and machine quilting

Materials you will need

  • Contrasting fabrics: fat quarters or scraps in two colour families — 32 squares of each
  • Border fabric: ¼ yard, or coordinating scraps
  • Binding and ties: ¼ yard, or ribbon
  • Backing fabric and batting: a 24" × 24" square of each
  • Felt in two colours for the game pieces
  • Thread, pins, sewing machine, rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat

Perfect for

Family game nights, picnics, camping, road trips, and a handmade gift that gets used rather than displayed.

If children will play with it

The felt pieces are small. Keep them away from children under three, and check the ties are firmly stitched before the board is handled by a child.

Questions makers ask

Do I need a special printer?
Nope! Every pattern is tiled to print on a regular home printer using standard A4 or US Letter paper — just tape the pages together and you're ready to cut. Prefer no taping? Each pattern also includes a large-format A0 file you can send to a copy shop, plus a projector file if you sew with one.
I'm a complete beginner — can I do this?
Absolutely. Our patterns are designed to be beginner-friendly, with clear, illustrated step-by-step instructions that guide you through the whole process. Thousands of first-time makers have sewn our patterns with no prior experience.
How do I get my pattern after I buy?

Can I sell what I make?
