The construction is two pieces and a fold. The cuff is a wide contrast band turned down over the top, which is what makes a home-made stocking look designed rather than improvised — and it is also the easiest part to sew, because it is a straight seam.

Almost anything works, which is why this is a good scrap project: quilting cotton, plaid, flannel, fleece, linen, burlap, corduroy, velvet.
Use one fabric for the body and a contrasting one for the cuff — a coarse texture like burlap or a soft one like sherpa gives the strongest result.
