Nothing around your neck.

That is the whole point of a cross-back apron, and it is the reason people who wear one all day never go back. A traditional apron hangs everything — its own weight, plus whatever is in the pockets — from a single strap across the back of your neck. After three hours you feel it. This one carries on both shoulders instead, with the straps crossing at the back.

You slip it over your head and you are wearing it. No tying, no reaching behind you, no bow that comes undone while your hands are covered in flour.

🧵 The Apron

  • 🎽 Cross-back straps — nothing around the neck, nothing to tie
  • 👝 Deep front pockets
  • 👗 Full skirt, generous coverage
  • 🪡 Straight seams throughout

📊 Skill Level — Beginner

This is a genuinely good first garment-shaped project, and here is why.

There is no closure — no zip, no buttons, no buttonholes, no hooks. There is no fitting — nothing has to sit exactly on a shoulder or a waist. Every seam is straight, and the whole apron is essentially a shaped panel, two straps and a pocket.

What you will practise is neat hemming and even topstitching, which is exactly what you want a first project to teach you. And because the apron is plain, that stitching is what makes it look good — so it is worth going slowly.

🧶 Fabric

Cotton, linen, canvas, twill, linen blends, or a light to medium-weight denim.

A word on colour, from experience. An apron gets dirty — that is its job. Natural undyed linen photographs beautifully and shows every single splash from the second wear. Mid-tone and darker warm colours — mustard, olive, terracotta, charcoal — absorb the wear and look better after six months, not worse.

If it is a gift, or if it is going to be worn rather than displayed, choose accordingly.

🎨 Perfect For

Potters and ceramicists · bakers and cooks · gardeners · artists and painters · crafters and sewists · florists · market stalls · and anyone who wears an apron long enough to notice their neck

Questions makers ask

Do I need a special printer?
Nope! Every pattern is tiled to print on a regular home printer using standard A4 or US Letter paper — just tape the pages together and you're ready to cut. Prefer no taping? Each pattern also includes a large-format A0 file you can send to a copy shop, plus a projector file if you sew with one.
I'm a complete beginner — can I do this?
Absolutely. Our patterns are designed to be beginner-friendly, with clear, illustrated step-by-step instructions that guide you through the whole process. Thousands of first-time makers have sewn our patterns with no prior experience.
How do I get my pattern after I buy?
Instantly. The moment your payment is confirmed, your files are ready to download — and we'll also email you a download link so you always have access. No waiting, no shipping.
Can I sell what I make?
Yes! You're welcome to sell finished items you make from our patterns. We just ask that you don't share, resell, or redistribute the pattern files themselves.
What sizes are included?
Each pattern comes with a full size range and a detailed size chart so you can pick your perfect fit before you start. All sizes are layered in the file, so you only print the size you need.
