🧶 Fabric

Cotton canvas, denim, twill or a medium-weight woven. Anything with enough body to hold its shape without stiffening the bag.

Two fabrics, and that is the point. The whole design is the contrast between the main body and the diagonal panel. Choose two fabrics that are clearly different in darkness, not just in colour — a light and a dark, or a bright and a neutral. Two fabrics of similar tone and the diagonal disappears, and with it the reason you made this bag.

A note on prints. The bag is small, so a large-scale print gets cut into fragments by the seams, and it hides the panel you have just spent time getting straight. A plain main fabric shows the design best. If you want a print, keep it small-scale, and keep the panel plain.

Straight seams throughout, and no fitting to worry about — a bag either measures right or it does not.

The one technique to be ready for is the exposed zip: the zip tape is stitched on the outside where everyone can see it, so the topstitching has to be even and parallel. It is not difficult, and there are three of them, so you will have it by the third.

If you have sewn a zip before, you are ready. If you have not, practise one on a scrap first — twenty minutes, and it changes the finish of the whole bag.
