Kids Ruffle Crossbody Bag — PDF Sewing Pattern
A small crossbody bag for a little girl, with a rounded flap, a gathered ruffle all the way around it and a snap closure. Big enough for small treasures, coins and a folded tissue.
Why it looks harder than it is
The ruffle covers the seam. On a bag with a plain curved edge, the seam runs all the way round in plain sight, and a millimetre of wobble on a curve shows for the whole length — which is exactly where a beginner's curved seam goes wrong. Here the gathers sit over it. A ruffle is the most forgiving edge finish there is, which is why this bag looks like a boutique piece and sews like a first project.
And the ruffle goes in at the same moment as the flap seam, flat, while everything is still easy to handle. Nothing is added on afterwards.
What you make
The body · the rounded flap with its ruffle · the shoulder strap · the closure
Features
- Gathered ruffle around the flap
- Crossbody or shoulder strap
- Snap closure
- Fully lined
- Light enough for a small child to wear
Skill level
Beginner friendly. Straight seams, one curved seam and one gathered strip. Basic sewing machine skills are all you need.
Perfect for
Birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, flower girl accessories, dress-up, craft fairs and handmade shops.
Safety, please read before making this for a child
- Check the finished strap length on the child who will wear it. A crossbody strap should sit at the hip, not lower — a long strap on a small child can catch on furniture, doors and playground equipment.
- Do not lengthen the strap beyond the measurement given in the pattern.
- Stitch both strap joins firmly, with the reinforcement shown in the instructions, and check them from time to time.
- The snap and the covered button are small parts. This bag is not suitable for a child under three.
