One pattern, eleven years of a child's wardrobe.
From one year old to twelve — the same jacket, in every size in between. You make it in 2Y for your own child, in 4Y when they have grown, and in 8Y for a niece. That is what the size range is really for, and it is rare on a pattern like this.
The jacket itself is simple and modern: raglan sleeves, a plain V neckline with no collar to fight with, two rounded patch pockets, ribbed cuffs that turn back as the child grows, and two wooden buttons. Every edge is finished with bias binding, inside and out.
✂️ No Serger Required
Worth saying plainly, because it is the reason a lot of people can make this one.
There is no overlocking anywhere in this pattern. Every raw edge is enclosed by bias binding, which is what gives the jacket a clean finish on both sides — and what means you only need a normal domestic sewing machine.
⚠️ You Will Need to Know How to Apply Bias Binding
This is a genuine prerequisite, not a formality.
Bias binding is the finishing method for the whole jacket: the neckline, both front edges, the hem and the pocket openings. If you have never applied it, learn it on a scrap first — it takes an evening and it is a skill you will use forever.
If you already know it, this jacket is a very satisfying place to use it. And a contrast binding turns that work into the best-looking part of the finished garment.
🧵 What You're Making
- 🧥 Unisex jacket, ages 1 to 12
- 💪 Raglan sleeves — no sleeve caps to set in
- ⭕ Plain V neckline, no collar
- 👝 Two rounded patch pockets
- 🔘 Two wooden buttons at the front
- 🎀 Ribbed cuffs, turned back
- 🎗️ Bias-bound edges throughout
🧶 Fabric
Main fabric: lightweight to medium-weight quilted fabric. Lining: a lightweight fabric, preferably 100% cotton. Cuffs: ribbed knit fabric. Binding: bias binding, ready-made or cut from your own cotton.
A note on the print. This jacket is designed to be unisex, and the fabric is what makes that true or not. A plain quilted cotton, or one with a very small tone-on-tone pattern, works for any child — and it also lets the quilting channels and the binding show, which a busy print hides completely.
📊 Skill Level — Intermediate
For sewists with some experience and a domestic sewing machine.
Nothing here needs special equipment, and the raglan sleeves actually make it easier than a jacket with set-in sleeves. What it asks for is accuracy: binding an edge evenly, and binding a curve evenly, which is what the pocket openings require.
If you have finished a garment before and you are comfortable with binding, you are ready.
