That is the whole difference, and it is why this piece ends up on the mantel rather than in the corner: a tree is decoration, a snowman is a character. He gets a name by the second Christmas.

Now the honest part about making him. There is not one difficult step in this pattern. Every point on the tree is a strip of fabric folded and pressed — no seams to match, no quarter inch to nail. And you never have to guess where a point goes: every row, every point and every colour is printed on the full-size template. You sew the rows flat on your machine, then roll the tree into a cone.

There are just a great many points: 108 of them.

That is the real shape of this project: it is not hard, it is long. Which is exactly why it is such a good December project — folding points needs no concentration at all. Pick it up in front of the television for a few evenings and put it down again without losing your place. ✨

🎨 Choosing Your Fabrics

The tree only reads as rows of points if neighbouring points differ in value, not just in pattern. That is why the pattern uses three families at three depths: red (dark), sage (medium) and ivory (light). The ivory points are the snow — they make each row visible. Keep prints small: a finished point is only 1¾" (4.4 cm) wide, so tiny snowflakes, sprigs, dots and small plaids work best.
