The layer you actually reach for. A puffer vest goes over a jumper in October and under a coat in January, it keeps your core warm without getting in the way of your arms, and it is the one piece in a wardrobe that works from autumn through to spring.
It is also the shortest route into quilted sewing. There are no sleeves to set in and no hood to shape — the whole garment is two panels, a collar and a zip, and the quilting is straight lines. Once you have made one, you know how to make a coat.

Choose a fabric with body that holds a quilted line: cotton twill, canvas, coated cotton, taffeta or a water-resistant technical fabric.
You will also need wadding and a lining. The wadding is what makes the quilting puff, so its loft decides how padded the finished vest looks.
A soft or drapey fabric will flatten the channels.
