🧥 Patchwork Quilt Coat — PDF Sewing Pattern

7 sizes, XS–3XL · Relaxed fit · Bound edges · Button front with pockets · A4, US Letter and A0 · Beginner friendly

A quilt coat is normally a big project — and not because of the sewing. It is the quilting: piecing the panels, then wrestling a whole coat's worth of layers through a domestic machine, which is the part that defeats most people.

This pattern skips it. It is drafted for pre-quilted fabric, which comes off the bolt already layered and stitched. You cut, you sew, you bind the edges. Everything that makes a quilt coat look like a quilt coat is already in the cloth before you start.

That is why it is genuinely a beginner pattern rather than a beginner-labelled one. There is no zip, no lining to bag out, no set-in tailoring — the seams are straight, the edges are bound rather than faced, and the bulk of the fabric does the shaping for you.

If you would rather piece and quilt your own panels first, the pattern works exactly the same way once you have quilted yardage in front of you.

🎨 Choosing Your Fabric

If your fabric carries a patchwork or a multi-print design, one thing decides whether the coat reads well: the patches need to differ in lightness, not only in colour. A collection of pretty mid-tone prints all at the same depth will merge at two metres into a mottled texture, and the patchwork disappears. Look for a mix that includes distinctly pale patches and distinctly dark ones, not seven mid-tones.

Keep the print scale small as well. On a garment cut from a patchwork field, a large motif gets fragmented by the seams and by the pattern pieces.

And do not skip the binding colour. A solid, darker binding around the front edges, the hem, the cuffs and the pocket openings is what draws the outline of the coat. Without it, the patchwork bleeds into the background and the garment loses its shape. It is a design decision, not a finish.

🛍️ What You'll Need

  • Pre-quilted fabric — or your own quilted yardage
  • Binding fabric in a solid colour
  • Buttons
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine, scissors or rotary cutter, clips
  • Iron
