Most patchwork jackets are a quilt with sleeves. This one is a jacket that happens to be patchwork.

The difference is in the finishing, and it is the reason this one can be worn somewhere other than a craft fair. There is a proper stand collar rather than a bound neckline. There are front plackets and worked buttonholes rather than ties or snaps. The sleeves are set in. The pockets are rounded patch pockets with the binding carried all the way around the curve. And the whole jacket is fully lined — so it slides over a sleeve instead of catching on it, and the inside looks as finished as the outside.

That is a real tailored jacket construction, made in patchwork. It takes longer than a bound-edge quilt coat, and it is a different garment at the end of it. ✨

🎨 Choosing Your Fabrics

This is the decision that decides whether your jacket looks like the photograph, so it is worth more than a moment.

Choose by contrast of lightness, not by harmony of colour. A patchwork only reads as a grid of squares if neighbouring patches differ clearly in how light or dark they are. Seven pretty prints at the same depth will make a beautiful stack of fabric and a jacket that dissolves at two metres into a mottled texture — and all the piecing work disappears with it.

Aim for roughly a third distinctly light patches, a third distinctly dark, and the rest in between. Then place them so that no two patches of similar lightness sit side by side.

Keep a plain binding, and make it count. The solid binding around the collar, the front edges, the hem, the cuffs and the pockets is the only unbroken colour on the whole jacket, and it is what draws the outline of the garment. Choose it clearly lighter or clearly darker than most of your patchwork. Without that contrast the patchwork bleeds outward and the jacket loses its shape.

Mixing florals, plaids, small prints and solids is what gives the piece its character — but the value contrast is what makes the character visible.

Not a beginner project, and it is fairer to say so. You will be piecing and quilting a patchwork outer, setting in sleeves, building a stand collar, working buttonholes and lining the whole jacket — and applying binding smoothly around two fully curved pocket corners, which is the step that catches people out. If you have made a lined garment before and you are comfortable with a quarter-inch seam, you have everything you need.
