⭐ Seven ornaments in one pattern, and every one of them made from scraps.

A five-pointed star with a swirl of curved strips spiralling out from the centre, quilted, and bound all the way round its points. It finishes at about 6½ inches — small enough to make in an evening, big enough to be the thing people notice on the tree.

The pattern includes 7 design variations and 8 colour palettes, so the same templates give you a whole set: one for the tree, one for the door, a handful for gifts, or a row of them strung into a garland.

🧵 What's Included

  • 3 full-size templates — star body, swirl placement guide, and swirl strips + hanging loop
  • A 1-inch test square on every template, so you can check your print scale before you cut
  • 30 photo-illustrated steps, from first cut to final press
  • ✔ Detailed cutting guide, fabric requirements and supplies list, in inches and cm
  • ✔ Quilting, binding and point-mitering guidance
  • 7 pattern variations and 8 colour palettes
  • ✔ FAQ, troubleshooting, and a "common mistakes" guide
  • ✔ Care instructions and gifting ideas
  • ✔ Formatted for US Letter and A4 home printers
  • ✔ Instant digital download

📐 Finished Size

Approximately 6½ inches (16.5 cm) across.

🪡 The Two Hard Bits, Taught Properly

Every star pattern looks lovely in the photograph. What separates a lovely one from a lumpy one is two things, and they are both about the binding.

The outer points. Turning binding around a sharp point without rounding it off or bunching the fabric is a knack. The pattern walks you through it with a close-up sequence.

The inner V's. The valleys between the points are the hardest place to bind on any shape — it is where fabric puckers and where most people give up on a star. There is a dedicated close-up sequence for those too.

These two sequences are the reason this pattern exists in the form it does. If you have made a star before and been disappointed by the edges, that is the part that was missing.

🧺 Made for Your Scrap Bin

The star is only 6½ inches across and the swirl is made of narrow strips. You do not need yardage — you need the pieces you have been keeping because they were too pretty to throw away.

This is the project that finally uses them, and because the pattern gives you 8 palettes, you can build each ornament around whatever you happen to have.

⚙️ How It Works

  1. 🛒 Buy the pattern and download the PDF straight away
  2. 🖨️ Print the templates and measure the 1-inch test square before you cut anything
  3. ✂️ Cut your strips and your star body
  4. 🪡 Piece the swirl following the placement guide
  5. 🧵 Layer, quilt, and bind — following the point and inner-V sequences
  6. 🎀 Add the hanging loop and hang it up

📊 Skill Level — Intermediate

You will piece curved strips and bind an angular shape. Neither is beyond a confident sewist, but both reward accuracy, and neither is a first-project technique.

That said, this pattern is unusually well supported for its level: 30 photographed steps, close-up sequences for the two difficult bindings, and a troubleshooting section for when something does not sit right. A confident advanced beginner who takes their time will manage it — and will come out of it knowing how to bind a point, which is a skill that transfers to every star quilt they ever make.
