👝 Quilted Boxy Zip Pouch — 3 Sizes

Small, medium and large · Quilted and padded · Boxed base · Zip closure · Illustrated step-by-step instructions

Most fabric pouches flop.

You unzip one on the bathroom shelf and it collapses sideways, everything tips out, and you end up holding it open with one hand while you rummage with the other. It is the single most annoying thing about a handmade pouch, and it has nothing to do with how well it was sewn.

These stand up. The outer fabric is quilted through wadding before it is cut, which gives the sides body instead of drape, and the base is boxed so the bag has a real footprint. Unzip it and it stays open on the counter with the brushes standing upright inside. That is what "padded finish" actually means, and it is the whole reason to quilt a pouch rather than just sew one. ✨

Three sizes, from one set of instructions — and they work as a set. The small one takes brushes or pens, the medium is a makeup bag, and the large is a proper washbag that goes in a suitcase.

Large 6¾ × 6¾ × 12″ 17 × 17 × 30 cm

🎨 Fabric

The small and medium sizes are fat quarter friendly. The large one needs a little more — around half a yard or half a metre for the outer.

This is a very good project for the pile of prints that are too small for anything else and too pretty to throw away. A pouch shows one motif well, so small-scale prints suit it far better than large ones.

And choose a zip that contrasts with your fabric. On a pouch, the zip is the only unbroken line on the whole object — it draws the top edge and outlines the shape. A tone-on-tone zip disappears; a contrasting one is the difference between a bag that looks made and one that looks finished.

📊 Skill Level: Confident Beginner

Two things in this pattern are the ones people are nervous about: inserting a zip, and boxing the corners. Neither is difficult, and a pouch is exactly the right place to learn them — it is small, it is quick, and if the first one is not perfect you have used a scrap of fabric rather than a metre of good linen. Make the small size first.
