Toddler Bear Backpack — PDF Sewing Pattern

A small corduroy backpack with soft bear ears, sized for a child of about one to four years. Finished size 22 cm wide × 25 cm high × 8 cm deep (8.7" × 9.8" × 3.1").

Why it looks harder than it is There is no buttonhole to cut and no zip to insert. The flap closes with a magnetic snap hidden underneath, and the wooden button on the front is purely decorative, stitched on at the end. The two parts of the snap are fitted into flat pieces before the bag is assembled, while everything is still easy to handle. The ears are two curved pieces sewn together, turned out, and simply caught into the top seam of the flap.

What you receive An instant PDF download, available the moment your payment clears. No finished backpack is shipped.

Materials you will need

  • Outer fabric: 40 cm of [width] cm — corduroy, canvas or a firm cotton
  • Lining fabric: 40 cm of [width] cm — quilting cotton
  • Fusible interfacing: 40 cm of [width] cm — medium woven fusible, type H250 or equivalent
  • 1.5 m of 25 mm webbing
  • 2 ladder sliders, 25 mm
  • 1 magnetic snap, [size] mm
  • 1 wooden button, [size] mm
  • Matching thread, a size [90] machine needle, and a walking foot if you have one

Skill level Easy. Suitable for a beginner who has sewn a straight seam before. Straight stitching, one curved flap, and two short lines of topstitching.

Safety notes — please read before making this for a child

  • The magnetic snap contains small strong magnets. Fit both halves exactly as instructed, with the prongs folded flat and covered by the lining, so that no part can work loose. Swallowed magnets are dangerous. Do not make this bag for a child who still mouths objects.
  • Stitch the decorative wooden button on securely with a strong thread and several passes. Check it regularly. A loose button is a choking hazard for a small child.
  • Adjust the shoulder straps so the bag sits high on the back and the straps cannot slip down over the arms.
  • This is a bag, not a toy. It is intended for a child using it under adult supervision.

Questions makers ask

Do I need a special printer?
Nope! Every pattern is tiled to print on a regular home printer using standard A4 or US Letter paper — just tape the pages together and you're ready to cut. Prefer no taping? Each pattern also includes a large-format A0 file you can send to a copy shop, plus a projector file if you sew with one.
I'm a complete beginner — can I do this?
Absolutely. Our patterns are designed to be beginner-friendly, with clear, illustrated step-by-step instructions that guide you through the whole process. Thousands of first-time makers have sewn our patterns with no prior experience.
How do I get my pattern after I buy?
