🎃 Trick or Treat Bag — PDF Sewing Pattern

One fat quarter per fabric · Fully lined · Structured, stands up on its own · Fabric handle · A4 and US Letter · Beginner friendly

You have a fat quarter of a Halloween print you love and have never cut into. This is what it is for.

One fat quarter for the outside, one for the lining, and you get a proper little candy bucket — not a floppy bag, a basket that stands up on the table by itself and stays open while a child drops sweets into it.

That is the whole trick, and it is in the materials list rather than the sewing. Fusible interfacing and fusible fleece behind the cotton are what turn a printed square into a structured object. Skip them and you get a soft pouch that collapses the moment it is put down. Most homemade fabric baskets flop; this one does not, and now you know why.

It is sized for a child to carry. A big bucket drags along the pavement and gets abandoned by the third street. This one hangs at the right height and stays there — and it comes home again next year, and the year after that, which a cracked plastic pumpkin does not.

The seams that shape the body are the part to take slowly: press each one properly and go at a steady pace, and the shape comes out clean. ✨

🪡 Pattern Details

🎃 Rounded structured basket that stands on its own 🧵 Fully lined interior in a second fabric 🖐️ One sturdy fabric handle 📐 Made from fat quarters — no yardage to buy 🖨️ A4 or US Letter 📊 Difficulty: beginner friendly

🛍️ Materials Required

  • Outer fabric: 1 fat quarter, approx. 18″ × 22″ / 45 × 55 cm
  • Lining fabric: 1 fat quarter, approx. 18″ × 22″ / 45 × 55 cm
  • Medium fusible interfacing: a piece approx. 18″ × 22″ / 45 × 55 cm
  • Fusible fleece: a piece approx. 18″ × 22″ / 45 × 55 cm
  • Matching thread
  • Basic sewing tools and a sewing machine

(Interfacing and fusible fleece are sold by the metre rather than as fat quarters — ask for the measurements above.)

🎨 Choosing Your Fabrics

Pick a print with strong internal contrast — a light motif on a dark ground, or the reverse. The body of the basket curves, and a tonal print loses its motifs on a curved surface. Ghosts on dark green, black cats on cream, candy corn on black: those all read from across a room.

And choose a lining that clearly differs from the outside. It shows as a band around the inside of the rim every time the basket is opened, and that contrast is what makes the finished piece look bought rather than improvised.

📌 Please Note

Do not skip the interfacing and the fusible fleece — they are what make the basket hold its shape rather than slump.

Print at 100% or Actual Size, never Fit to Page. Colours may look slightly different from one screen to another. This listing is for the pattern only, not a finished basket. Sweets not included.
