👖 Wide Leg Palazzo Trousers — PDF Sewing Pattern

7 sizes, XS–3XL · Pleat front · Tie waist with elasticated back · 1 cm seam allowance included · A4, US Letter and A0 · Layered files

Most wide-leg trouser patterns are a rectangle with an elastic waistband. These are not.

A deep pleat falls from the waist down the front of each leg and opens as it descends — which is why they read as designed rather than made at home, and why they move the way they do when you walk. It is one construction detail, and it is the whole difference.

The waist does two jobs at once. At the front, a self-fabric tie and soft gathers, so it looks like a trouser you had to fit. At the back, a plain elasticated casing, so it fits like one you did not. You get the front of a tailored trouser without a zip, a fly, or a waistband to adjust — which is exactly why this works as a beginner pattern rather than one that is merely labelled beginner. The seams are straight, the closure is a casing, and there is nothing in it to fit.

🪡 Pattern Details

〰️ Deep drape pleat down the front of each leg 🎀 Self-fabric tie at the centre front waist ➰ Elasticated back waist 📏 Full-length, very wide leg 🚫 No zip, no fly, no buttons, no fitted waistband 🖨️ A4, US Letter or A0 📊 Difficulty: beginner

🎨 Choosing Your Fabric

This is the decision that makes or breaks these trousers, so it is worth a moment.

The whole design depends on drape. The pleat only opens, and the leg only falls in soft folds, if the cloth is fluid enough to obey gravity. In a fabric with body — quilting cotton, poplin, canvas, stiff twill — the same pattern produces something that stands away from the leg and holds its own shape. It is not a small difference; it is a different garment.

Choose something soft that falls: hold a length of it over your hand and see whether it drops into folds or props itself up. If it props itself up, it is the wrong cloth for these.

⚙️ How It Works

1️⃣ Buy the pattern — your download link appears straight away 2️⃣ Open the layered file, switch on your size and print it, or take the A0 to a copy shop 3️⃣ Cut — the seam allowance is already included 4️⃣ Sew the seams, thread the elastic and the tie, hem, and wear them 👖

Questions makers ask

Do I need a special printer?
Nope! Every pattern is tiled to print on a regular home printer using standard A4 or US Letter paper — just tape the pages together and you're ready to cut. Prefer no taping? Each pattern also includes a large-format A0 file you can send to a copy shop, plus a projector file if you sew with one.

Absolutely. Our patterns are designed to be beginner-friendly, with clear, illustrated step-by-step instructions that guide you through the whole process. Thousands of first-time makers have sewn our patterns with no prior experience.
