✂️ A Note on Cutting — Read This Before You Buy Fabric

The deep waistband is cut on the cross grain, at ninety degrees to the legs.

On a plain fabric you will barely notice. On a striped fabric it becomes the whole design: the stripes run horizontally across the waistband and vertically down the legs, and the change of direction at the waistband seam is what gives these trousers their graphic edge.

If you are choosing between a plain and a stripe, this is the argument for the stripe. Just buy a little extra — cutting a waistband on the cross grain takes more cloth than you would expect.

🛍️ Fabric

Choose something light and fluid. These trousers live on their drape: the wide leg only moves if the cloth lets it.

Good choices: viscose, rayon challis, lightweight linen, linen blends, Tencel, cupro, light crepe.

Avoid: stiff cottons like poplin or quilting cotton, and anything with body. They will hold their shape instead of falling, and you will get a stiff wide trouser rather than a fluid one — the single most common way this style disappoints.

You will also need: a sewing machine, an iron, thread, pins, scissors, and a printer or a copy shop for the pattern.

📊 Skill Level — Intermediate

Nothing here is advanced, but two things need care. The waistband is cut across the grain and sits low, so it has to be attached accurately or it will twist — and on a striped fabric any wobble shows immediately. And a fluid viscose or linen shifts under the machine in a way that a stable cotton does not.

If you have made a garment before and you are comfortable with a slippery fabric, this is a good next project. If it is your first, choose a linen blend rather than a viscose — it behaves.
