The coat you make once and wear for ten years.

A long tailored coat with a classic notched collar, princess seams shaping the body through the shoulders and waist, and a skirt that flares gently to mid-calf. Double-breasted, fully lined, with a pocket on each hip. Worn open over a roll-neck or closed against the wind โ€” it works both ways, which is what a good coat does.

This is a real sewing project. It is also the one that changes what you think you can make.

๐Ÿงถ Fabric โ€” Read This Before You Buy

A coat lives or dies on its cloth. This is not the project for whatever is on sale.

Main fabric โ€” choose a coating weight: wool melton, coating wool, wool blend, boiled wool, cashmere blend, or a good heavyweight wool-look synthetic. It needs enough body to hold the collar and the flare, and enough softness to roll at the lapel.

Avoid: anything thin, anything with stretch, quilting cotton, and stiff upholstery-weight cloth. A thin fabric gives a limp collar and a skirt that hangs instead of flaring. A stiff one gives a coat that stands away from you.

Lining: a smooth lining fabric โ€” viscose lining, Bemberg or acetate. It has to slide over your sleeves.

Interfacing: fusible interfacing for the collar, the lapels and the front edges. This is what makes the difference between a coat and a dressing gown, and it is not optional.

Buttons: you will need buttons for the double-breasted front.

You will also need: a sewing machine, an iron and a pressing cloth, thread, pins, tailor's chalk, scissors, and a printer or a copy shop.

โš™๏ธ How It Works

  1. ๐Ÿ›’ Buy and download โ€” your files arrive instantly
  2. ๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ Print at home (A4 / US Letter) or at a copy shop (A0)
  3. ๐Ÿ“ Measure yourself, check the size chart and the finished measurements, and choose your size
  4. ๐Ÿงต Make a quick toile of the bodice in cheap cloth first โ€” see below
  5. โœ‚๏ธ Cut your wool, your lining and your interfacing
  6. ๐Ÿชก Sew, following the illustrated instructions
  7. ๐Ÿงฅ Press it properly and wear it out

๐Ÿงช Make a Toile First โ€” Seriously

Sew the bodice โ€” front, back and one sleeve โ€” in a cheap cotton before you cut into your wool. It takes an afternoon.

Coating wool is expensive, and unlike a dress, a coat is worn over other clothes, so the fit through the shoulders and across the back matters more than usual. A toile tells you what to adjust while the change is still free. Every experienced coat maker does this, and it is the single reason some coats fit and others hang in a wardrobe.

๐Ÿ“Š Skill Level โ€” Confident Intermediate

Let's be honest about what this asks of you, because it is not a beginner project whatever anyone tells you.

You will build a notched collar, set sleeves into armholes, apply interfacing, and construct and attach a full lining. None of it is beyond a confident sewist, but all of it takes care, and it is a lot to meet for the first time on expensive fabric.

You are ready for this if you have made a lined garment before, or set a sleeve, and you are comfortable following illustrated instructions without needing every step demonstrated.

Consider something else first if this would be your first garment, or your first lining. Make a lined jacket, then come back to this โ€” it will be a much better coat.
